Tottenham Hotspur to keep an eye on Barcelona star Memphis Depay during 2022 FIFA World Cup

Tottenham Hotspur will keep an eye on transfer target Memphis Depay as he takes the field for the Netherlands at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, according to 90min (h/t Football.London).

The Barcelona star is in the final year of his contract at the Spotify Nou Camp. He will be available on the transfer market during January and could leave as a free agent at the end of the season.

Naturally, a player of his calibre in the last year of his contract will attract attention. He has been named in the Netherlands’ 26-man squad that will travel to Qatar later this month for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Spurs are said to be eager on signing him and will be keeping an eye on how he performs for the Oranje in the Middle East. He has struggled for playing time at Barcelona which could affect his starting status under manager Louis van Gaal.

Depay to Spurs?

Depay has scored once in just three matches for the Catalan giants this season under manager Xavi Hernandez. The 28-year-old is too good to see his prime years being wasted on the bench.

At Spurs, he may have to struggle for a regular starting spot as well, but it may not be as competitive as it is at Barcelona right now. Xavi almost seems to have something against the former Manchester United star the way he is being overlooked at the moment.

He becomes an even more enticing prospect on a potential free transfer. Spurs would be wise to be a track of the situation and be ready to make a move when the time is right.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

If it takes paying some money to beat potential competition for Depay, then so be it. The Netherlands play against Senegal, Ecuador, and Qatar in the group stage of the World Cup in the coming weeks.
