Steve McClaren is in line for a sensational return to the coaching team at Man United.

Manchester United Football Club are undergoing major change. That process will continue and intensify over the next few months.

Players will be sold. Players will be bought. The powers-that-be at Old Trafford will change many personnel, including coaching staff and even higher up.

Erik ten Hag will have his say on backroom employees he’d like to work with. Yesterday, we were led to believe a deal bringing Mitchel van der Gaag to the Theatre of Dreams had been reached.

Not long after the Van der Gaag news broke, Jason Burt of The Telegraph had another update for us. He believes that a familiar face will be ‘definitely joining’ United’s coaching staff under their new Dutch manager; Steve McClaren.

Apparently, Ten Hag ‘made it clear’ that he wanted the 61-year-old to join him, with the former England manager seemingly accepting the offer.

Anyone with even half an interest in English football will know about McClaren. His managerial CV is impressive. Newcastle United, Middlesbrough, Wolfsburg and many other clubs have had the pleasure of McClaren as a manager.

Obviously, United fans will know him as Sir Alex Ferguson’s number two in 2000. The Englishman actually won every single trophy on offer at United during his short tenure here – which is an incredible feat, leading many to believe McClaren was amongst the best in the business as a coach.

He’d leave to try his hand as a manager quickly after. Now, though, he’s back in the coaching game – and what an incredible opportunity this is for McClaren.

What I like most about this is the familiarity McClaren has with the club. He worked at United during the highest of highs and he will accept nothing less upon his return. It also gives Ten Hag someone alongside him who knows English football better than most.
