After Arsenal initially agreed a fee with FC Porto for Fabio Vieira, reports suggested it wouldn’t affect a potential deal for Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans.

The Evening Standard and The Times were among the outlets to claim Arsenal would pursue the Tielemans deal regardless of the Vieira signing, whilst Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports was simultaneously claiming Arsenal’s interest had cooled.

At the time, Dorsett seemed to be outnumbered, but that’s started to change.

Goal write that Arsenal are taking a step back from the Tielemans deal to finalise other targets, putting a move on ice.

Ryan Taylor claims that though the deal could be revisited later in the window, it’s not currently a priority and has never been close to completion.

It’s worth noting that no one seems to be ruling out a move at this stage. It’s very possible Arsenal could go back later in the summer, particularly if there are any midfield departures.

The Athletic recently reported that Tielemans was a name high on Arsenal’s summer shortlist, but it was a “more nuanced situation” than their move for Gabriel Jesus and “likely to depend on other movement in central midfield”.

If an Arsenal midfielder or two end up leaving before the end of the summer, whether permanently or on loan, it’s very possible the club would then pick up the Tielemans thread. For now, it’s looking like other deals are being prioritised.
