AC Milan struggling to renew Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Rafael Leao’s contract
This seems like a surprising one, considering the price tag that hovers over the Portugal international’s head. Spurs have been wise when operating in transfer windows.
We haven’t seen our team make extravagant signings on a regular basis when it comes to the financial side of things. Leao is believed to have a release clause in the region of £127million.
That is a crazy amount of money. Leao is a talented player – one of the best in Italy – but does signing him for a nine-figure fee make sense when Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and one of Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison are regular fixtures in our starting XI?
Leao to Spurs?
After all, Leao isn’t a player who would join a team for warming the bench and neither are the four players whose names are mentioned above. Leao is on a contract that expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt).
If he doesn’t renew his deal in the next year and a half, then he could become more and more affordable for Spurs. But in that situation, one can imagine the level of competition to sign the 2021-22 Serie A Player of the Year, especially on a free transfer if it comes down to that.
The 23-year-old is a superb winger – one who can offer a decade of his services at the top level. Signing him would boost the depth and quality of any team’s attack in the world – but it Spurs or anyone else.
But perhaps Tottenham are better off focussing their attention and money elsewhere unless Leao is available for a sensible sum or if one of our first-team attackers leave in the coming year.

A world-class centre-back and a quality central midfielder who can also attack makes the most sense ahead of the January transfer window.
