Manchester United’s interim boss Ralf Rangnick has revealed that the club could make several signings during this summer’s transfer window.

The Red Devils currently have the likes of Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Lee Grant whose contracts expire on June 30. The quintet could leave on free transfers.

Elsewhere, Nemanja Matic has confirmed that the current season will be his last with the club. There could be several other fringe players heading for the exit door during the summer.

In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, Rangnick said that the club could pursue a couple of players independent of the new manager’s philosophy. He has already recommended those names.

He said: “There might be a couple of players – and I have already named those players to the board – that independent from formation, from style of football, and independent from a new manager, that could be of interest for a club like United.”

The German tactician added that three or four signings won’t be sufficient this summer with several players heading out at the expiry of their respective contracts.

He further explained: “But in general, if you look at the size of the way the team needs to be rebuilt, I mean, it’s not enough to bring in three or four new players. It will be more, bearing in mind how many players will no longer be here with the contracts running out.”

Our view:

United have yet to announce the appointment of a permanent head coach, but it is widely known that Erik ten Hag will take over the hot seat at the end of the campaign.

The Dutch tactician has agreed terms over a contract, but a confirmation is being delayed with United currently in contact with Ajax to trigger the €2 million release clause.

Ten Hag will want signings of his own this summer. Considering his managerial tenure at Ajax, the focus could be on pursuing young players with potential.

However, there could also be a couple of marquee big-money signings made. RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkuku could be a potential target. He was reportedly recommended by Rangnick.

Rangnick was keen on pursuing the French attacker during the last transfer window, but was left infuriated by the board declining his request. They plan a serious approach this summer.

A world-class striker could be another priority for the Red Devils. Harry Kane seems back on the radar. A deal could be on if the striker snubs a contract renewal at Tottenham Hotspur.

The England captain could form a deadly strike partnership with Ronaldo next term, but will come at a premium price. He could cost in upwards of £100 million in the next transfer window.
