Transfer News: Tam McManus believes Tottenham Hotspur signing Pedro Porro would be a “statement” signing
Former Hibernian striker Tam McManus believes that Tottenham Hotspur signing Sporting Lisbon right-back Pedro Porro would be a “statement” signing for the north London side.
Spurs have been been heavily linked with a move for the Spaniard in recent months as Antonio Conte looks to upgrade the right wing-back position for the second half of the season.
Now, McManus while speaking exclusively to Football Insider, believes that Lilywhites securing the 23-year-old’s signature would make him a “statement” signing for the north London club
“If Porro is who he wants then they have to go out and get him. It would be a statement that the club are backing the manager. I would say that’s a likely transfer that could happen sooner rather than later because there is a lot of talk about it and Spurs could really do with a player like him.”
Emerson Royal has been our go-to player on the right-hand side of the pitch. The Brazilian simply put has failed to live up to their expectations from his so far. He has lacked that final pass up front while he has also been involved in some silly mistakes at the back.
Other options like Djed Spence and Matt Doherty have simply failed to gain the trust of the manager so far and as a result, have struggled for game time in the process. It could be said that we are vulnerable on the right-hand side, something which our opponents have not shied from using against us.
Porro has been excellent for the Portuguese side so far this season, registering 10 assists in 21 games for them in all competitions. He also impressed against the Lilywhites when the two sides met for their Champions League group-stage games.
However, the Liga Portugal side will only sell him if his release clause worth €45 million is met. While this may be a big figure for a 23-year-old, the Spaniard has shown himself to be worth that amount.

The January transfer window is now open and adding Porro would make him an instant upgrade to all the options that Conte has currently. It remains to be seen if the north London side can secure his signature in the coming days.
