Manchester United are nearing towards agreeing a new contract with number one goalkeeper, David de Gea.
Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United will undoubtedly look completely different to that of Ralf Rangnick.
Simply put, I’d guess as many as ten first-teamers will leave on free transfers, be sold on or depart on loan. There’s going to be a completely fresh feel about the place come August.
Well, one man who looks set to commit his future to the club is David de Gea. There have been many suggestions that contract talks have been well underway for a while now.
Today, we have fresh information from journalist Ekrem Konur. He took to Twitter to provide us all with the latest information.
Apparently, United ‘are close’ to extending the contract of their key star de Gea. In a tweet from the same source back in February, it was claimed the new terms will run until 2025. Unless something significant has changed, that’s likely to remain the same for the 31-year-old.
I love De Gea. I think he’s been a wonderful servant for Manchester United over the last decade. However, giving De Gea another three years on contract seems like a little steep.
We have to be honest with ourselves, De Gea is already in decline, while his distribution isn’t as good as the other top goalkeepers in the country. It’s also worth noting that Erik ten hag loves to play a possession-based game, starting with the shot-stopper.
This feels like United giving themselves another problem to worry about in a year or two – and when you factor in Dean Henderson, things become even more complicated.
A new De Gea deal effectively ensures Henderson will push hard for an exit this summer. And I’d love to see the Englishman given his opportunity – purely because I feel he’s a better fit for Ten Hag than De Gea is.
All United are doing here is looking to protect their asset in De Gea, but I don’t believe any elite level club are going to break the bank to bring him in at this stage of his career.
To me, this feels like a mistake.
