Tammy Abraham 2022

Manchester United are keen on luring Roma striker Tammy Abraham back to the Premier League this summer, Corriere dello Sport (today’s edition, page 8) claims.

The Red Devils have been fancied to pursue a new centre-forward, and it appears they are assessing their options after missing out on Darwin Nunez to Liverpool.

According to Corriere dello Sport, the club have now been credited with an interest in Abraham, who netted 26 goals in his debut campaign with Roma last season.

Premier League rivals Arsenal have also been linked with the marksman, but it is reported that manager Jose Mourinho considers him ‘unsellable’ this summer.

Roma signed Abraham from Chelsea for €40 million. The Blues have the option to re-sign him next summer for €80m. United may have to offer a similar fee to test the Giallorossi’s resolve.

Our view:

United were heavily reliant on Cristiano Ronaldo up front last term. The Portuguese netted 24 goals in his homecoming season, but it was not sufficient to deliver Champions League football.

The likes of Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford struggled to impress while Bruno Fernandes was also inconsistent. The trio netted a combined tally of 20 goals over the course of the campaign.

This should urge manager Erik ten Hag to bolster the attack for next season. The priority for now appears on signing a right-sided winger. Ajax’s Antony has emerged as a top target for the club.

If United were to consider a new striker, they could be better off looking at alternative options to Abraham. Only 17 of his 26 goals for the Giallorossi came in the Italian top-flight last season.

We have already seen Romelu Lukaku struggle on his return to the Premier League from Serie A. He netted 30 times for Inter in 2020/21, but could only muster 15 goals for Chelsea last term.

It does not appear worthwhile to make a huge outlay on Abraham. He is a quality striker with a goalscoring threat, but has not done enough yet to command a significant price tag.
