Man United’s move to sign Jurrien Timber are currently halted.
After conceding goals by the bucketload last season, I think it’s pretty fair to say that Manchester United will be looking to bring in at least one defender of some capacity.
Not too long ago, there were many claims linking the Red Devils with a move to sign Jurrien Timber from Ajax. After all, it’s an easy link to make given the Erik ten Hag connection with the player.
Well over the last fortnight or so, all has gone pretty quiet on that front. Now, Jonathan Shrager has explained why…
Apparently, United’s talks with the 20-year-old have broken down. That took place when discussions were surrounding personal terms. This is just pure conjecture on my part, but I’d imagine the two parties were on opposite ends of the scale when it comes to agreeing weekly wages.
What’s interesting is that Shrager states that the talks haven’t ended for good. As things stand, they’re stalled, meaning the two sides could yet continue with their negotiations at some point during this transfer window.
Timber is one of many examples of players who have improved their game under Ten Hag. Though at aged 20, I do wonder whether the Dutchman is ready for a move to the Premier League.
He’d come to Manchester under so much pressure to perform and that does feel a little harsh on a young man who is still learning and perfecting his craft.
Perhaps Timber himself has realised that, hence, he wants a premium to make the move earlier than he’d like. Either that, or it could be something to do with the lack of guaranteed playing time he’d get here in Manchester – particularly in a World Cup year.
If I’m being picky, I’d love to see United move for someone with a little more experience than Timber. That’s not to say he’s a bad player. I just believe the club need someone who can come in and anchor that defence from day one.
