Man United have been consistently scouting Porto goalkeeper, Diogo Costa, this season.
Manchester United Football Club could be in the market for a new goalkeeper in the future. David de Gea has a deal that expires in 2023, while his expensive wages make it tough to prolong his stay at Old Trafford.
Behind the scenes, Erik ten Hag will hold meetings with his coaching staff and the United board about what to do. Ater all, De Gea is hardly the ideal fit for this possession-based system.
One man who has popped up as a possible target is FC Porto’s Diogo Costa.
The shot-stopper has been in impeccable form this season, while the Portugal international absolutely fits the bill as a modern-day goalkeeper who is great with the ball at feet.
Now, 90min.com have provided the latest information on a potential United move for Costa. They state that the Reds ‘have scouted’ the 23-year-old at least half a dozen times this season, as the gaffer considers his long-term options for the goalkeeper position.
It’s reiterated that ten Hag has a big choice to make in regards to his number one goalkeeper, despite De Gea willing to stay at the club on reduced terms.
United are looking at all the options available to them, with Costa amongst them. That deal became more difficult this week, as Costa signed a new deal at Porto, keeping him at the club until 2027. It’s worth noting that contract has a £65m (€75m) release clause.
First and foremost, that’s an awful lot of money to spend on a goalkeeper. However, it’s such an important position to get right stylistically. Costa would slot right into the team and instantly make us better when playing out from the back.
Replacing De Gea from a shot-stopping standpoint is nigh-on impossible. He’s the best in the business in that regard, so you’ll strengthen in some aspects but immediately become weaker in others.
It’s a tough situation.
