Lyon interested in Tottenham Hotspur right-back Djed Spence

Olympique Lyonnais are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur right-back Djed Spence, as per the Daily Mail (h/t Evening Standard).

This is a deal that could make sense for them, considering their current right-back, Malo Gusto, is linked with a move away from the Groupama Stadium. If the 19-year-old Frenchman leaves Lyon, they would want to sign Spence on loan.

This could be a win-win situation for the French giants and Spurs. Djed Spence has had absolutely no meaningful playing time under manager Antonio Conte.

The Englishman has only played five minutes of league football this term. It is surprising considering the amount we invested in the player last summer when he was signed from Middlesbrough after a brilliant season on loan at Nottingham Forest.

Sanction this deal

Hence, if we find a suitor for the Englishman, then it would be fair to let him leave and develop his skills elsewhere for the time being. It seems very unlikely that Conte will hand him minutes here.

He already has Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal at his disposal, while the Lilywhites are seriously pursuing a deal for Sporting CP right-back Pedro Porro. It remains to be seen what Spence’s stance would be on such a move.

A move to Ligue 1 will at least give him the chance to play for a top-division outfit. It would be a step up from playing in the Championship, which he did last season.

Moreover, if Gusto does leave, Spence would surely be fancied under manager Laurent Blanc. Spurs must, however, ensure that whoever takes Spence pays his salary in full so we are able to at least remove his wages from our books for the remainder of the season.

With the playing time he is getting (or not getting), it currently seems like money down the drain.
