Journo: AS Roma star Nicolo Zaniolo has agreed personal terms with Tottenham Hotspur

AS Roma playmaker Nicolo Zaniolo has apparently agreed on personal terms with Tottenham Hotspur, as per transfer expert Rudy Galleti (h/t Football.London).

However, there is one major hurdle – Roma are yet to reach an agreement with Spurs over any potential transfer. Given that his contract at the Stadio Olimpico expires in the summer of 2024 (Transfermarkt), I Giallorossi hold the key to his transfer.

The 23-year-old Italy international has been on Spurs’ radar for a while. Last week, Sky Sports claimed that Roma are open to sending the player on a loan deal to Spurs with an obligation to buy.

They seemingly value the playmaker at 35million Pounds. This isn’t a small amount but it is also not a valuation that should put off a team like Spurs, considering Zaniolo’s age profile and potential.

We need Zaniolo at Spurs

An argument can be made, however, that with Zaniolo in the last 18 months of his contract and open to a move for Spurs, it is perhaps not the ideal scenario to pay Roma whatever price they put on the table.

With a stop-gap signing and Zaniolo’s commitment to moving to Spurs, we can sign him for nothing at the end of next season or perhaps at a lower price in the next 12 months.

But we arguably don’t have that long. Signing Zaniolo will show Harry Kane and Antonio Conte that the club is keen to pursue success in the short term as well. Their futures at the club hang in the balance as of now.

We may not have time to wait around for the former Inter Milan player and should go for him this window itself to ensure that we can fight for the top four this season. Missing out on the UEFA Champions League will be a blow for sure.

More Tottenham Hotspur News:

Zaniolo won’t guarantee qualification to the competition but he will significantly increase our depth in attack as well as attacking midfield. If Conte wants an experiment, he can play him at right-wing-back – a problem position for us in recent years.
