Erik ten Hag has explained how he wants Manchester United to play in a recent interview with MUTV

The Red Devils flew out to Thailand for the first leg of their pre-season. They are set to play against Liverpool on Tuesday before travelling to Australia to take on Melbourne Victory.

Ten Hag named a 31-man squad, with Cristiano Ronaldo being the notable absentee.

The 37-year-old cited family reasons as an explanation for his absence. However, the Portuguese star did feature in the new kit launch despite rumours of his departure this summer.

In the MUTV interview, Ten Hag explained how he wants his team to play this season.

“We want to play a proactive style of football,” he said. “On the ball and off the ball. Trying to do that has to be our intention. The coaches bring it over to the team that we are, in every situation, proactive.

“We are brave and willing to have the ball, to give each other options. But also off the ball, to get the pressing style is what we’re working for together.”

Ten Hag is the perfect manager for United

Erik ten Hag was the manager of Ajax between 2017 and 2022, with the 52-year-old having also served at Go Ahead Eagles and Utrecht.

He also worked with Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich for two seasons when he was in charge of the German club’s second team.

The Dutch boss was incredibly successful at Ajax where he won three Eredivisie titles and also reached the 2018-19 Champions League semi-final.

He is the perfect manager for Manchester United who have forgotten how to win trophies since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

The Red Devils were known for their attacking style of play when the Scot was at the helm of affairs. The club have appointed several managers since his retirement but they haven’t stuck to United’s philosophy.

However, they have now signed a coach who is the embodiment of the Manchester club’s philosophy.

Ten Hag likes to play an attacking brand of football, reminiscent of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City. Like the Spaniard, he emphasises possession and high-tempo football.

His style of play is perfect for United who enjoyed great successes with this brand of football.
