It was so typical of West Ham’s rotten luck with new signings and injuries when Cornet was forced off just 35 minutes after finally getting a Premier League start under David Moyes at the beginning of October.
When Cornet went off with that calf injury it was expected the Ivory Coast star would be back in a week or two.
But, over three months on, West Ham’s £17.5m summer signing has not been seen in claret and blue since.
In November Moyes revealed Cornet’s comeback had been hampered by a setback and the Scot said he would not be available until after the Premier League pause for Qatar.
The Hammers could really do with Cornet’s pace, powerful running and energy in a side seriously lacking all those things.
And West Ham fans were fully expecting to see Cornet back involved for the restart against Arsenal.
But when the Ivory Coast star was not available against Arsenal or Brentford, Moyes revealed he had been sent to France to see a specialist and the club were awaiting the results.
Emotional Maxwel Cornet social media post appears to confirm West Ham’s worst fears over rare injury
As reported earlier this week it was claimed Cornet may face an operation on an issue that is so rare the specialist had only seen it twice in 25 years.
Now an emotional Cornet social media post appears to confirm West Ham’s worst fears over the rare injury.
Taking to Instagram, Cornet says his ‘disappointment is big’ and that the ‘road is long’ while stating his pain at having not been able to repay West Ham fans for the love they showed him when he signed.
“The disappointment is big… disappointed not to be able to return the love you showed me when I joined the West Ham family,” Cornet said on Instagram.
“The road is long but the end is near!
“Thank you all for your many messages, rehabilitation is going very well, see you soon. Happy New Year everyone!❤️ Maxi.”
How near the end of his injury torment is anyone’s guess.
Let’s hope Cornet can recover in time to play a part in helping the Hammers climb the table after he was relegated with Burnley last season.
We’re all right behind you Maxi!
