On Friday, Fabio Vieira was pictured in a protective boot on social media, leading to understandable fan concerns about the new signing’s fitness.

Vieira has attempted to allay those fears, posting on Instagram that the boost is “just a precaution”, and he’s “all okay”.

Though it’s difficult to say for sure, it’s likely that this injury isn’t new, but the same one the player picked up in early June.

Vieira was away playing for the Portugal u21s, and he scored two goals before coming off with a leg injury. He then missed the subsequent two games of the international break.

It’s possible Vieira is still carrying that problem, or that he had a minor setback. Either way, it sounds like he’s not expecting to be out for long.

A protective boot is often viewed by fans as one of the worst-possible signs for an injury, but that’s not always the case.

Arsenal loanee Jordi Osei-Tutu was spotted wearing a protective boot and using crutches after Rotherham United’s game against Portsmouth back in mid-April. He then played 90 minutes in the next game and featured in every other game of the season!

As Vieira points out, the boot is a precautionary measure in this case. It can indicate bad news, but it doesn’t necessarily. For now, let’s call this a crisis averted.
