After a long wait and plenty of speculation, Gareth Southgate confirmed his England squad for the World Cup on Thursday afternoon, with a trio of Arsenal players making the cut.
It was no surprise to see Bukayo Saka and Aaron Ramsdale involved in the squad, with Ramsdale currently the joint league leader for Premier League clean sheets and Saka hitting 10 Premier League goal contributions at the weekend.
The duo have been key players in Arsenal’s table-topping side this season so far, and they’ve also been regulars in the England squad for a while now – having both attended the Euros last summer.
The real uncertainty was around Ben White, who seemed a long shot for the tournament just a few months ago. Yet the 25-year-old will have been delighted to learn on Thursday that he will also be involved in the squad.
White has really changed the general perception of him over the last few months, becoming a key man in Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side.
The defender has proven himself more than capable in and out of possession, playing for the team at the top of the Premier League. His versatility as a centre-back or a right-back also makes him ideal for international tournament football.
England play one of the opening fixtures of the World Cup, facing Iran on Monday, 21st November at 13:00 GMT. After this weekend’s final round of club fixtures, it will be straight off to link up with the squad for the tournament and prepare for that game.
